My friend, A, took me to Yakiniku Kashiwa on a Saturday afternoon for a long overdue catch-up. It was a little place in Crows Nest, near where the Woolworths used to be. Look out for the sign that says “YAKINIKU” (Japanese BBQ).

What I loved: The lunch time special.
What I didn’t: Cash only.
Will I come back: Yes.
Both A and I opted for the 4-selection lunch time special yakiniku set. For $19.50, we each got to pick 4 items from the list of meat/seafood/assorted vegetables. Not bad at all!
In fact, the value of the lunch special was fantastic. The set also came with a bowl of rice, a miso soup and a small salad.
The portion of the meat and seafood was generous and was more than enough for two people. The meat quality was good and it was very nicely seasoned with just enough saltiness to bring out the original flavours of the meat.
The menu (there’s a PDF version of their website too).
I heard that there’s always a queue during lunch time. We came at about 2pm on a Saturday just after the lunch-time rush, we got a table straight away. Lucky.

We arrived in there 25 minutes before the last order, but a waitress told us that they closed the kitchen already. We went out and were checking the restaurant next door. The next moment we saw is that they let another couple of customers in. We went in again but unbelievably they refused us this time too. I talked to another staff in the counter and finally they let us in. We ordered some yakiniku for the amount of $53. When we received the bill, anything in detail was not written in the bill and that was $60.
That sounds like a frustrating experience. How was the food and did you challenge the bill?
