We came to Sunee’s Thai Canteen to celebrate a colleague’s recent admission to the Supreme Court of NSW as a solicitor. Wohoo, welcome to the club.
We let her pick the lunch venue because she is coeliac and is on a strict gluten-free diet. We ended up at Sunee’s Thai Restaurant, and I was pleasantly impressed with our gluten-free meal!

What I loved: The gluten-free options.
Will I come back: Yes.
Sunee’s Thai Canteen shares the seating area with Pailing, a modern Australian eatery under the Merivale Group umbrella. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing, after all, it is located in a bar – the ivy.
Larb gai – minced chicken salad with dried chilli, lime dressing & roasted rice powder (gf), $15. This was refreshing and full of flavours, beautifully done.
Green curry of chicken with apple eggplant, chilli, basil w/ jasmine rice (gf), $15. A nicely balanced curry, went down incredibly well with the jasmine rice.
Stir fried chicken with chilli jam & cashew nut, $15. Even though this dish was not marked “(gf)” on the menu, they kindly agreed to make this dish gluten-free for us! As you can see, the chicken pieces were chunky.
Pad siew with chicken, $17. Again, another dish that they made into gluten-free upon our request. Honestly, if you didn’t tell me it’s gluten-free, I wouldn’t have guessed! It’s easily better than some of the “normal” pad si ew offered by other restaurants.
However, the price’s not too friendly.
Char grilled marinated pork with tamarind & chilli sauce, $15. This was the only dish that they couldn’t do a gluten-free variation. Although we all agreed that their gluten-free dishes were top-notch, we had to admit that as soon as we tasted this “normal” dish, we noticed the flavouring of the gluten-free dishes were more toned down.
Naturally, this seasoning of this dish was heavier than the other gluten-free ones. However, the pork turned out to be a bit on the saltier end.
Everyone at the party, including the coeliac girl, enjoyed the food. Overall, I was really satisfied with our gluten-free meal as it tasted very much like what we usually have anyway, and I didn’t feel that the quality of the food was compromised. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone on a gluten-free diet.
