“Let’s Do Dessert” (formerly known as “Sugar Hit“) has always been the highlight of the Sydney Good Food Month for me. For $20, you will be served with a glass of dessert wine and a plate of dessert specifically put together by the dessert chefs at participating restaurants throughout Sydney.
I had never been so impressed by a Let’s Do Dessert treat like I had by Ananas Bar & Brasserie. Everything was hands-down a.m.a.z.i.n.g.

What I loved: The food. The ambiance. The good looking staff (both men and women!)
Will I come back: Yes.
Unlike some of my bigger foodie friends (and fellow bloggers), whilst I always get excited when Let’s Do Dessert season comes, I don’t try to hit every one of them. I usually just pick one or two after looking at the menus on the Sydney Good Food Month guide and blog reviews. To be honest, most of the Let’s Do Dessert’s that I had been to in the past years were all a bit of a hit-and-miss, and they all reminded me of what Mike said about daily specials, that is: “They’re not good enough to make a permanent item on the menu.”
This year, I picked Ananas because I’d dined there twice on previous occasions, and their desserts impressed me both times. I figured, if they’re usually good at their dessert, they can’t go too wrong with this, right?
Glass of Yalumba FSW 8B Botrytis Viognier dessert wine. We loved this as it’s got a clean taste and not dead sweet.
Now, here’s the highlight of the night, Ananas’ ‘Les Desserts Four Play‘ tasting plate. Starting from right to left: Exploding Black Forest, Earl Grey and Rose Eclair, Mango Passion & Coconut Entrement, Triple Chocolate Fantasy Tart.
After a mini discussion on which one we should start destroying, I decided to take a bite of the Earl Grey and Rose Eclair first. It was an incredibly elegant dessert with the aroma of rose and Earl Grey oozing out from the soft shell of the eclair.
I then moved on to the Mango Passion& Coconut Entrement. I don’t usually like coconut mixing with my dessert, however, this little cake created a perfect harmony between the fruity flavours with just a hint of coconut. I have to admit, the addition of the coconut totally elevated the sophistication of the cake.
The Triple Chocolate Fantasy Tart was more than decent and very rich in flavours, I especially liked the slightly crunchy crust.
When the waitress sent us our tasting plates, she pointed to the Exploding Black Forest and said: “Make sure you eat the one in the shot glass in one go, otherwise, you will wear it.” Mmmm, intriguing!
I carefully picked up the cherry-shaped dessert with a spoon and put the whole thing in my mouth… Mind, blown.
I knew it’s got liquid inside, but I seriously didn’t expect it to be THIS GOOD. The shape of the “cherry” was actually made of a delicate layer of chocolate, it’s so thin that the whole thing exploded in my mouth with minimal impact and all the flavours of the deconstructed classic rushed out all at once.
It’s a moment that I would cherish forever…
A few of my friends had been to other Let’s Do Dessert this year, and they all felt Ananas‘ was the best. Hopefully Ananas would start becoming a regular participant of Let’s Do Dessert after this year’s success (please!).
And yes, that’s a pineapple-shaped lamp.
P.s. “Ananas” means “pineapple” in French, in case you haven’t gotten the hint.

Thank you very much for this nice review. We will probably do let’s do dessert again, but you shouldn’t wait that long to come back! The dessert menu is changing at the moment, it’s a good reason to come at the bar and try with some desserts.
