So, these are kürtős kalács, also known as chimney cakes, sold at Kürtősh. They are traditional Hungarian pastries that are crispy on the outside, soft on the inner walls and hollow on the inside. These funky looking chimneys are not the only things sold at Kürtősh – they have a huge variety of cakes sold “by weight” here!

What I loved: Cakes being sold by weight.
Will I come back: Yes.
The kürtős kalács making area is right by the door. It’s quite fascinating seeing these little chimneys being made from scratch. I had never had a kürtős kalács before in my life, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they cut up pieces of kürtős kalács for their customers to try.
Randomly selected cakes were also available for trying. I like their generosity.
All of their cakes are sold by weight. Depending on the density of each cake and how big of a sweet tooth you have, everyone could ask for different sizes of cakes and would be charged accordingly. I think it’s a brilliant system on so many levels, especially for people with Decidophobia when it comes to cakes – Don’t know which to pick? Just get a small slice of everything!
An antique weight. How fitting.
We each got 100g (give or take) of the cake of our choice. The prices were $4/100g for the slab cakes; and $4.5/100g for the chilled slab cakes.
My Lemon Crumble Cheesecake, $4.50/100g (this slice was only $4.05). Light and smooth (maybe a little too light for a cheesecake).
Cookies and cream cheese cake, $4.50 per 100g. No surprises, but it’s the ultimate comfort dessert.
Chocolate and peanut butter ganache, $4.50 per 100g. Rich and sophisticated.
Classic strawberry sponge, $4.50 per 100g.
Cappuccino, $3.50.
Look at the door handle! It’s the tool that they use in making the kürtős kalács.
