Mejico re-defines modern Mexican cuisine and does it elegantly with its masterful use of spices and a splash of creativity. The extensive drinks menu boasts a collection of 230 different tequila that you can choose from. The vibe is joyous (must be the tequila) and the food is delicious. L and I were already planning our next visit half way through our entrees.

What I love: Guacamole. Corn lollipop. Their extensive drinks menu.
Will I come back: Yes.
Mejico is deeper than it looks from the outside. It’s loud, it’s fun, it’s the kind of restaurant that comes to mind when you want to throw a party or grab a drink.
This must be the most extraordinary bar display that I have ever seen in a restaurant, fully stocked with exotic bottles of alcohol tempting curious patrons.
The 230 different tequila that Mejico offers could easily trigger the inner decidophobia in anyone. To help the indecisive souls, the drinks menu comes with a wooden wheel, carved with different levels of “price”, “intensity” and “flavour”.
Each dial of the wheel has a corresponding number. For example, I chose “basic (100)” + “curious (30)” + “caramel (4)” = 134. This number corresponds to “Tequilador Reposado“, $10, on the menu.
After the cute and knowledgeable waiter put our order through his iPad and gave us a detailed introduction on tequila of choice, he encouraged us to savour each sip and try to really appreciate the beauty of it. Each tequila shot came with a glass of palate cleanser designed specifically for the tequila that you choose. Honestly, I never thought that I would be sipping tequila one day instead of skolling it, haha. Oh I had a nostalgic moment of our good old Uni years and all the house parties that we had, fun times!
We also ordered some healthy chia concoctions: Afternoon delight (Jamaica hibiscus tea, apple juice, chia seeds), $8.5. Silk Stocking (lychee, pink grapefruit, chia seeds), $8.5. The Cure (citrus, ginger ale, mint, chia seeds), $8.5. Tasted like delicious mocktails.
Guacamole (avocado, serrano chili, pistachios, plantain chips), $14 (G, D, V). The thin and crisp plantain chips were amazing, so was the smooth and flavoursome guac. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the “smashed by the table” service, not sure if it was because we were sitting at the lounge area?
Corn lollipops (chiptole mayo, queso fresco, paprika, shredded coconut, popcorn), $12 (G, V). The mayo was delicious!
Jalapeno poppers (feta, herbs, chipotle mayo), $14.
The feta cheese must have balanced out the chilliness of the jalapeno covered in the perfectly coated golden crumb, it was not chilly at all and tasted a little like capsicum.
The tacos came in twos. We ordered Soft Shell Crab Tacos (cabbage & apple slaw, jalapeno, lime mayo), $16 (D), and Vegetable Tacos (capsicum, chargrilled zucchini, corn, tomatillo salsa verde), $12 (D, V).
The soft shell crab tacos were a disappointment. Soft shell crabs don’t belong in tacos, period.
On the other hand, L couldn’t stop praising her vegetable tacos. If we hadn’t already ordered so much food, she probably would’ve ordered another serving of the vege tacos!
Corn Salad (Spanish onion, coriander, tomato, serrano, queso fresco), $9 (G, V).
Patatas bravas (smashed potatoes, parsley, paprika, aioli), $9 (G, D, V). As an avid potato lover, I never miss a chance to order patatas bravas. Surprisingly, the patatas bravas here are tiny whole potatoes, rather than the usual chopped potatoes chunks. Although it’s quite a novelty, I actually rather prefer the chopped ones as those tend to be softer and more moist on the inside.
Octopus & chorizo (hot pot of octopus, chorizo, potato, chipotle), $28 (G, D).
What we ordered was plenty for the four of us to share. We each spent about $50 each – not bad at all for a fantastic night with awesome food, great company and fancy drinks.
Overall, we thought the entrees and small plates were more impressive than the main dishes. I need to come back again for their churros!
