What I loved: Udon in cast iron pot.
Will I come back: Yes.
Komachi has been around for many years, but today was the first time I stepped foot in it. The restaurant is a little dated, but very Japanese.
The atmosphere on level 2 is much better than downstairs.
The menu.
Salmon Hand Roll, $4.5. I was a bit disappointed that their standard salmon hand roll comes with cucumber, not avocado.
If you want avocado with your salmon roll, you can ask them to make it for you.
Vegetable tempura hand roll, $4. Avocado mini-roll, $2.80. Komachi mini-roll, $2. There are many vegetarian-friendly dishes on the menu – it’s interesting how I never really paid attention to vegetarian options at restaurants, but now that my best friend is vegetarian, the first thing that I check when we eat out nowadays is the little “V” sign.
Sukiyaki udon (soy flavoured fish stock soup, topped with sukiyaki beef, egg, tofu & vegetables in a hot pot), $19.
The udon was absolutely fantastic! The cast iron pots kept the food ultra-hot, perfect for a cold winter day. The soup was flavoursome and delicious. This is a dish that I would order again and again.
Tempura udon (soy flavoured fish stock soup, topped with large prawn & vegetable tempura), $14.
Chashu pork ramen (miso flavoured meat stock soup, topped with sliced roasted pork & vegetables), $15.
Seaweed ramen (salt flavoured meat stock soup, topped with large prawns, mixed seafood & vegetables), $13.
I really don’t know why Concrete Playground rated Komachi as one of the best ramen in Sydney. I felt their ramen was mediocre at best. The soup was watery (I was expecting thick soup), and lacked the kick.
Having said there, there is one cool thing about Komachi‘s ramen – if you are game enough to take the “Ramen Challenge” by downing a whole bowl of ramen and soup within 60 minutes, you get the mega big bowl of ramen for free and a $100 meal voucher on top! And of course, you get your name and photo on the wall of honour.
Before you get too excited…the bowl contains 1.5kg of ramen noodles + 2.5 litres of soup + 300 grams of meat and vegetables……..(I lost my appetite just imagining the sick bowl)………..and if you are not successful you will have to pay $100!
