Grumpy Barista is a little quaint and charming cafe in Petersham that made its mark on Instargam with their guilt-inducing cronuts. I came for the cronuts, I was wow-ed….but not in a way that I had hoped. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t hesitate to return just for the avocado on toast drizzled with their exquisite zesty house-made dressing.

What I loved: Avocado and special dressing!
Will I come back: Yes.
I noticed that the sun shined directly into the 3 window tables on our two separate early afternoon visits. Even though it was cold outside, I felt like my back was burning 15 minutes after sitting by the window. Luckily, we were able to swap seats both times.
The Menu.
Smashed Avocado on Rye Spelt Toast with our house zesty chilli kicked oil dressing, $8.5 + extra feta $2.5. I loved this! The dressing was light yet so addictive. Oh so very satisfied.
Smashed Avocado on Rye Spelt Toast with our house zesty chilli kicked oil dressing, $8.5 + extra feta $2.5 + extra Tasmanian smoked salmon $5. So I came back again for more – this time, with smoked salmon on top. Yum.
Italian Hot Pot with two baked eggs + mushrooms + onion + homemade 4hr slow cooked spicy tomato sugo, $14.50. This reminded me of the Shakshuka at Grandma’s Little Bakery in Alexandria.
I love brunch dates with my man and our weekend chats :)
Grumpy Barista’s famous cronuts!
To be honest, the cronut was way, way too sweet for me – even without the syringe of extra nutella. I was only able to swallow the cronut after scraping off the big wad of icing inside it.
They open pretty early, but unfortunately they are closed on Sundays.
