If you think soy milk hotpot is not your thing, you must have not tried it at Masuya Suisan.
I have had friends addicted to Masuya’s soy milk hotpot before. However, I tried it once at the original Masuya on O’Connell Street but it didn’t leave an impression on me. I decided to give it another chance this year after Masuya Suisan opened – this time, I fell in love!
We ordered three different hotpots for comparison.
Firstly, the Wagyu Snow Hot Pot (garlic soy milk soup), $48/pot. Aside from the good quality of the wagyu, the thickness of the sliced wagyu is slightly more substantial than the usual hotpot meat you get from other restaurants. The difference is marginal, but it makes it all the more satisfying.
Secondly, Wagyu Sukiyaki Set, $38 per person (minimum order 2 persons). The set comes with wagyu (full-blood 9+ border blade), vegetables, rice/udon and miso soup.
My feeling for sukiyaki is mixed. I like it but I tend to grow tired of it half way through the pot because it gets too sweet for my liking. Anyway, putting aside my personal bias, there are not many places that do sukiyaki in Sydney and Masuya Suisan does it well.
Thirdly, Kurobuta Pork Shabu Shabu Set, $38 per person (minimum order 2 persons). The set comes with meat, vegetables, udon, 2 kinds of dipping sauce (ponzu and yakiniku) and garlic paste.
For the meat, you get 100g of sliced pork loin and 100g of sliced pork belly. I found the shabu shabu rather ordinary compared to the soy hotpot and the sukiyaki. Having said that, it has a clean taste and is definitely superior than most hotpots Sydney has to offer.

Masuya
On a side note, the original Masuya is on O’Connell Street in the Sydney CBD. They do good bento boxes here, which makes it a popular place amongst city workers.
Shogun Bento, $30.80.
Salmon Lover’s Bento, $26.80.
Masuya also does soy milk hotpot for dinner, but with seafood only. Have a look at the menus before you decide which Masuya to visit today.
