“EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY” (sirens) “Get away from me!”
“Run! This is not a drill!” “No! Noooo!” “WHERE’S MY SON?!”
“Tell my wife I love her…”
Have you ever wondered what a zombie apocalypse would be like in real life? Wonder no more, just see for yourself at the annual Sydney Zombie Walk. The Sydney Zombie Walk started in 2009, and it aims to raise funds for a very fitting charity: the Brain Foundation. A group of friends and I caught the zombie fever after watching the popular US TV drama, The Walking Dead, and we actually joined the walk in 2012.
Here are some tips that will help you in preparing for the epic walk:
- Do not wear over-the-top costumes, it’s more frightening to see normal people turned zombies than Mario in zombie makeup.
- Make your own fake blood by mixing red food dye with chocolate sauce.
- Pack your fake blood in a water bottle and only splash them on when you get to the starting point (it’s less messy this way).
- Use scar print-on tattoo stickers and white contact lenses for added effects.
- Real looking weapons are prohibited.
- You must register on the Sydney Zombie Walk website for the walk.
I made our own blood using the red food dye + chocolate sauce method. It’s seriously real and very economical! Also, I felt more comfortable smearing red chocolate sauce over ourselves than using “fake blood” capsules with questionable origins in party shops.
It also wasn’t particularly hard to wash off.
It was our first Zombie Walk and we weren’t sure how big the crowd would be. We decided to do our makeup at the starting point, Hyde Park, so that we could still bail if the party turned out to be lame.
We started seeing more and more zombies as we approached the Archibald Fountain – wohoo it’s ON! For the whole afternoon, we dragged our legs, moaned and roamed the streets of Sydney as zombies.
True love’s first bite.
One of the major streets in the city, Elizabeth Street, was partially blocked for us zombies.
It’s free to participate, but it is compulsory to register for the walk on their website http://www.sydneyzombiewalk.com/.
There were also lots of spectators along the side of the road. Walking with a horde of zombies is definitely one of the craziest things that I’ve done in my life!
Hospital themed zombies are always spooky.
These guys got bitten while they were at work.
It’s a family event – better tough your kids up in case a real zombie apocalypse hits right?
And this kid.
Awww and this kid. How adorably creepy.
For The Walking Dead fans – remember him from season 1?
