Paint the town red! Or yellow. Or blue. Or pink. Or green. Or orange. Or…
Burano Island is a cute little island being part of the Venetian lagoons, and a trip here would definitely add a splash of colours to your holiday.
The Island could easily be accessed via the ACTV water bus operating in the Venice Lagoons. We bought the 48-hour ACTV pass, and it covered the route to Burano Island and the neighbouring Murano Island.

It takes just over an hour to get from St Mark’s Square to Burano Island. We toured the Museo Correr, St Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace in the morning, and made it to Burano in time for a late lunch (late for us, but probably normal for the Italians, they have their lunch late and dinner time is usually 9pm).
Here’s ACTV’s official website for the timetable that would come in handy when planning the trip.
As our water bus approached the Burano, the colourful houses immediately became noticeable.
Hmm, something about this photo is not right…Is the…Is the tower tilted? Yes, Burano has its very own leaning tower!
The Church of San Martino with its leaning tower up close.
We arrived at Burano at about 3pm together with a ferry-load of tourists. Even so, I still felt a sense of calmness and peace when we set foot on the Island as the small island atmosphere had been pretty well-preserved.
Apparently, the idea of painting their houses in such vibrant colours came from a fisherman, in the hope to identify his house more easily when he came back from the sea after dark.
So lovely.
Spring brought even more colours to Burano.
More different colours.
And more.
Happy snap!
