We heard about the Burger Project from a well-traveled foodie friend. According to his friend, this burger joint is considered the next Shake Shack of Sydney. Yep, it’s all hearsay and I’m not even sure if there’s such a saying… All I was able to find out was that this place is by the chef hatted Neil Perry of Rockpool. Since Mike and I thoroughly enjoyed our Shake Shack burger at the Dubai airport earlier in the year, I was keen to try the Burger Project out.
My conclusion is that Grill’d downstairs does not have to worry about this competitor because they actually offer very different types of burgers. Grill’d is where you can find the full-on full-sized “man” burgers that’s perfect for a hungry man; whereas Burger Project is where you would find snack-size “elegant” burgers that would be more suitable after a night out sobering up (but they do close at 10pm).

What I liked: The burger bun.
Will I come back: I’d like to give it another shot.
I probably shouldn’t have visited in their opening month – the place was packed, the queue was long, and the food ran out. Fortunately, the indoor dinning area’s actually a lot bigger than it seems from the outside. It was relatively easy to find a table despite the long queue at the front.
I was quite sad that I didn’t get to try their thrice cooked fries, but it’s ok, I will come back again for them.
Here’s a copy of their menu. It’s quite simple, and seems to have all the essentials of a good burger joint. I like how they have shakes in addition to the usual soft drinks.
Cheese burger (grass fed beef, cheese, onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce and secret sauce), $8.90. Yes, it’s just a burger and I believe that is the point. The bun actually did remind me of the Shake Shack buns. However, the rest of it reminded me too much of McDonald’s burger, it must be the pickles.
My only complaint would be that the pethatic amount of lettuce.
Spicy Pork Belly (crispy free range pork belly, salted chilli, pickles, pickled slaw and lettuce), $9.90.
This is a burger worth trying.
I also got the Salted Dulce De Leche Real Shake, $6.5. Mmm, I didn’t taste any flavours except for thick milk? If this is what all their ‘real shakes’ are like, then I’d rather have the Maccas’ fake shake.
Kudos to them being environmentally friendly.
Overall, I wasn’t wowed by the Burger Project. However, I do acknowledge that it is not fair to judge a restaurant by its opening month. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to return soon.
