Have you ever felt cheated after waiting forever for a table at a much hyped-up restaurant and the food turned out to be barely mediocre and then you hated yourself for wasting your time for nothing? Orto Trading Co is the exact opposite. I was surprised that there were no queues on both of our recent weekend visits given the overall well-rounded-ness of this cafe. Look, they even have scotch eggs!

What I loved: The fresh flowers. Easy to find parking. Opens on Sundays.
Will I come back: Yes.
It’s on ground floor of a apartment building, and, admittedly, the shopfront and interior did not wow me at first sight.
Nevertheless, the fresh flowers that filled the room saved the ambiance.
Coffee in cute cups, checked.
Hotdog (chorizo, mozzarella, chimmichurri, fried egg), $14. Dont get too excited – This was on the menu on our October 2014 visit but it wasn’t there when we went in November 2014.
Hash (birkshire ham, tomato, avocado, rocket, lemon, asparagus, poached egg), $16. I’m glad they kept this on their menu. As a potato lover, I will wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone. Despite the hash, the whole dish was very well balanced and tasted healthy and light rather than greasy.
Carrot cake hotcakes (toffee pecans, gingerbread, carrot curd, mascarpone), $18. I saw lots of good reviews on this so I was glad to see that they had also kept this on the menu…Unfortunately, not really my thing. I found it to be too sweet and impossible to finish. It’s pretty unique though, I’d never seen it elsewhere in Sydney.
Wagyu burger (brioche, pickles, mozzarella, beetroot, tomato, polenta chips), $18.
Baked eggs (sobrasada, charred capsicum, flor de latte, tomato, toast), $18.
Breaky Joe (last night’s chilli beef, bacon, fried egg, brioche), $14. This seems to be what have replaced the Hotdog. I’d say it’s a good change! The brioche bread was especially top-notch.
1. Green apple, cucumber, lime mint juice.
2. Mixed berry smoothie.
3. pineapple, passionfruit, apple, lime.
Their menu (November 2014 version).
There are two large tables inside which makes it a perfect venue for a group brunch.
