It was a particularly sunny Saturday afternoon. I felt like going on a lunch date with Mikey, but I also felt like a burger. However, I didn’t want to have just any burger, since it’s a date. That’s when I thought of Chur Burger – the burger shack that replaced the two-hat Assiette that we still hadn’t had the time to try.

Visited: 17 May 2014 (for lunch).
Food: 7.5/10 || Ambiance: 7/10 || Service: 8/10
What I liked: Relaxed atmosphere. Burger bun. Sweet potato chips.
What I didn’t: Nothing.
Will I come back: Maybe.
I was a little disappointed when Assiette closed down as we thoroughly enjoyed our last visit there. That’s why when I found out that Chur Burger is owned by the same chef, Warren Turnbull, I immediately had high expectations for this place.
The interior walls were painted with bold graffiti but the place was otherwise decorated with simplicity.
A one-pager menu featuring 6 types of burgers and the usual burger companions – chips, soft drinks, milkshakes.
I don’t know why, it’s like junk food has to come in a family, I normally don’t drink soft drinks/shakes, but I always feel compelled to have them with burgers, pizzas and the like. The same goes with fries/chips/wedges, I always experience a sense of incompleteness when my burger comes without them.
Grilled beef, cheese, tomato jam, mustard mayo, pickle, $10.
Pulled pork, Chur bbq sauce, red slaw, fennel mayo, $10.
They used brioche buns for their burgers so it’s extra fluffy.
Apart from the brioche buns, the burgers here were exactly what they advertised for – I’d say they were very honest burgers with no real surprises. I guess this is where you want to be when you just really want a quality burger.
Salted caramel milkshake, $8. Slurp!
$8 was somewhat expensive though.
In the middle: Sweet potato fries, garlic, lime, $5. A humongous portion of solid sweet potato blocks. As for the taste, it wasn’t as crispy as I had hoped.
Overall, for a burger joint that labels itself as “voted the best burgers in Sydney” and carries the former “2-hat chef” honour with it, $10 a (normal sized) burger seemed a more than reasonable price. The food itself had no fault, but it’s somewhat stuck between a tummy satisfying man-burger (like Grill’d burgers) and a fine fancy burger (like the Elvis burger at Brewtown). Not sure if I’d ever crave for their burgers again.
