I first noticed Great Aunty Three when I spotted the bright red doors on the corner of Wentworth Street in Surry Hills. Its funny name and the portrait of the seemingly nice Asian lady on the red doors triggered my curiosity and prompted my visit to discover what awaits behind them.

What I love: The baguette.
Will I come back: Maybe.
I tried looking for more information on Great Aunty Three’s website but I didn’t get very far. The lady told me that they had a quiet opening in November 2014, so it is still quite new.
I wanted to try everything on the menu! It has all the Vietnamese signature dishes from bahn mi (bread rolls) to pho (beef noodle soup) to buns (vermicelli salad).
Pho bo (beef served three ways with rice noodles in traditional beef ‘feur’ broth, simmered for 12 hours), $10.
Vietnamese iced coffee, $4. Strong, sweet and perfect for a sleepy Saturday afternoon.
I loved how their pho comes with different types of beef. It had a mixture of tender and firm beef slices and the beef balls had a great chewy texture. The rice noodles were scrumptious but the soup is slightly too sweet for my liking.
“The Sydney”, roast crackling pork with shredded apple slaw and house sauce, $9. We were swiftly served with our food within 5 minutes after we sat down, very efficient service.
It was kind of salty on the first bite, probably because all the sauce was on one side of the roll – The only solution would be taking a big mouthful to get a balance of the flavour, the roll and ingredients.
Although $9 seems pricey at first for a Viet roll, you would find that it is very different than the average Viet rolls – the pork was crackling, the seeds were a healthy bonus – not to mention, unlike most Viet roll shops, what you get is a sit-down meal. Still much cheaper than the other options in Surry Hills.
Takeaway boxes also available.
“Enjoy your lunch”, says Great Aunty Three looking over your shoulder.
