Cafe Cre Asion is one of those “hidden gem” cafes, tucked away in a little alley lane, quietly waiting to be discovered. It serves light breakfast, lunch and a wide selection of colourful macarons with a Japanese twist.

What I loved: The sandwiches.
Will I come back: Yes.
Cafe Cre Asion is the first Sydney cafe that I’ve been that serves charcoal water. Charcoal water is big in Japan and the idea is that the characteristics of charcoal would purify water by absorbing the unwanted organic matters in tap water, and would add good minerals naturally contained in the charcoal to the water. Of course, the charcoal would have been treated before it is used, and the purified water is clear and has no odor.
The menu’s simple, but the items all seemed appetizing and reasonably priced.
Master stock braised pork neck, pickled red onion, grilled cabbage, aged cheddar cheese, honey and whole grain mustard, $12. The taste of the braised pork had a noticeable Asian influence, and gave the sandwich a fusion edge. The pork was tender and well-seasoned. It’s a slightly heavier sandwich than the other ones, and was particularly filling given the generous portion of bread and meat.
Poached free range chicken, chili pickled Asian mushroom, Iceberg lettuce, zucchini, chive, toasted white sesame and wasabi mayo, $11. This was my favourite sandwich of the day. It’s light but not boring at all – the hint of wasabi mayo especially brought the sandwich to a different level.
Smoked salmon, soft boiled papanui egg, pickled fennel, dill, caper and cream cheese, $11. Great sandwich, but you could never go wrong with smoked salmon anyway right?
Japanese sencha (aaa), $8. There were 3 grades of sencha (Japanese green tea) to choose from. I thought I would spoil myself a little and went for the highest grade, being “aaa”. It came with a classic Japanese tea set, and the tea was of a nice colour and very aromatic. I’m afraid I don’t have enough sencha knowledge to make a comment on whether it was worth the $8 or not…but it was a pot of nice tea!
No one could walk out of Cafe Cre Asion without bringing a box of macarons home. It’s got the most interesting macaron flavours in Sydney, such as: plum wine, yuzi, bamboo charcoal and sesame, truffle, and a lot more!
The colours of happiness…
L absolutely loved their macarons. As for me, although I was definitely intrigued by the exotic flavours, I found the overall taste was not as moist as I had hoped, and the shell was a bit hard. I guess it’s because I’m in love with the macarons at Laduree, and the macarons are very different here.
Cookies to-go, $8.50.
