As soon as I saw the chalkboard menu at Something for Jess, I could feel that they really believe in sourcing the freshest and seasonal local produce for their customers. Apart from extensively listing out every ingredient used in each dish, there was even a “Produce of the Week” board showing where the food had come from.
【Sydney Food】Bread & Circus
Bread & Circus is another brunch hotspot in Alexandria that offers abundance of food and hipster-ness on a plate. Just when I was wondering why I felt an almost instant affection with this cafe – I realised, it’s got fifty shades of my favourite colour (pink, that is) in every corner! Subliminally I’d already given Bread & Circus the nod of approval before I even began my lunch.
【Sydney Food】Palomino Espresso
Palomino is a gem nestled in the hustle and bustle Sydney CBD. It has the characteristics of a CBD takeaway (fast, reasonably priced, simple), yet it also possesses the chillax vibe of a hipster cafe.
Enter the door of Palomino, sit down, take a deep breath, use a bit of imagination – and you could have lunch like it’s Saturday afternoon, every, single, day, during your precious weekday lunch hours.
【Sydney Food】Mad Spuds
As a potato lover, I felt overwhelmingly spoiled for choice when I first visited Mad Spuds – potatoes are the common denominator in almost every, single, dish. Baked potato, crispy potato skins, potato cake, potato bread, potato pancake, hash browns… you name it!
【Sydney Food】Tea Cosy .::Devonshire Tea::.
The Tea Cosy (formerly Tara Tea Room) has been my go-to place in The Rocks when the markets are on for the past years.
Here, you can have a set of old fashioned Devonshire Tea or a Ploughman’s Lunch, with a pot of brewed Irish tea nicely tucked in their famous knitted tea cosy. I honestly never really liked scones before I had the scones at the Tea Cosy more than 6 years ago.
【Sydney Food】The Fine Food Store .::Chillax cafe at the Rocks::.
The Fine Food Store offers honest food at reasonable prices in the centre of The Rocks. This cozy cafe is a lovely place for breakfast and lunch if you happen to be in the area. I came here for a weekday lunch, the food came out fairly quick and the atmosphere was laid-back and relaxing.
【Sydney Food】Grandma’s Little Bakery
I had passed by Grandma’s Little Bakery many times over the past years but I had never had the urge to go in, mainly because the shopfront looked rather plain and not particularly interesting (compared to the hipster cafes in the area). One day, however, as Mike and I drove past it again, I noticed something’s different – it might have been the funky dog statues, or the nicely decorated flower pots out at the front, or the customers sitting under the lovely sunny afternoon enjoying themselves – that made me really wanted to find out what this place is all about.
I thought to myself, “If it is still open after all these years, they much be doing something right”.
【Sydney Food】West Juliette
The size of the sandwiches here at West Juliette is enormous.
Overall, I liked the casual atmosphere and the comfy vibe of the cafe. However, it appears that we somehow managed to pick two of the least appetising dishes on the menu – both dishes were a hit-and-miss for us. The only reason why I am considering coming back is so that I could try their hand cut royal blue chips that looked extremely alluring.
【Sydney Food】John Smith
John Smith is definitely the top three generous cafes in Sydney in terms of the serving size. Come hungry, leave happy.
【Sydne Food】The Wedge Espresso
The Wedge Espresso is a quirky little cafe nestled in Glebe that’s great for people-watching. Its atmosphere is laid-back, friendly and full of natural light.
People often say the hardest thing to do is to be good at the simple things. I think The Wedge Espresso has done exactly that – making everyday magic with the simplest ingredients. There is nothing too special about this place, in fact, it’s the simplicity that they do best keeps luring me back.
